Proper v-guide sizing and placement are essential for reliable belt tracking and performance. The Sparks Mol team works with you to determine the ideal v-guide size and positioning based on your specific application. V-guides are especially effective for short, wide belts and long, narrow belts.

Available in multiple sizes, the appropriate guide is selected based on your conveyor belt dimensions. For optimal performance, maintain a 1/16″ clearance on both sides and beneath the v-guide—it should never fit tightly within the groove. While v-guides help improve belt tracking, they cannot correct tracking issues caused by improper conveyor design.

Guide Options

Continuous V-Guides

Continuous v-guides are thermo-welded or glued on the bottom side of the belt and matched up to corresponding grooves in the pulleys and conveyor bed for positive belt tracking. Notched options provide greater flexibility.

Cast Urethane V-Guides

Cast urethane v-guides allow tighter control of both lateral and longitudinal belt tracking as well as greater speed control, and will never delaminate from your belt. Best for applications with a lot of abrasion and debris build-up. Cast urethane is long-lasting, durable, and perfect for demanding applications where standard v-guides tend to wear out quickly. Sparks Mol can custom cast segmented polyurethane v-guides for special tracking applications where small, minimum pulley diameters are required.

Placements

There are several ways to designate where you would like a guide to be placed on a conveyor belt. The most common position for guide depends on the number of guides on the belt. A conveyor belt with the position of one guide down the center (on the bottom) is called center pulley side, or CPS. When multiple guides are present, flush to outside edge is used to indicate there will be a guide at each lateral edge of the belt. All other measurements are indicated by either an indented distance from the center of a guide to the edge of the belt, or a center-to-center measurement between two guides.

Guide sizing

The size of a v-guide is mostly determined by the grooves in the pulleys or slider bed of your conveyor. Depending on placement, this may also impact the center or indent of the v-guide(s). Generally, your v-guide should have 4mm of clearance on each side of the groove for pulleys and 2mm of clearance on each side for slider beds. V-guide is commonly cut down or notched to reduce flex fatigue on the top cover, which can cause cracking. When cracking occurs, there may be a minimum pulley violation.
